Cool Heads with Flooded Floors

I was at a friend's house the other day, when one of the teenagers came running out, panicked because the toilet was spewing water everywhere. We went in to take a look, and found that the nut holding the flushing assembly had suddenly and inexplicably cracked, causing all the water in the tank to start leaking on the floor, inches deep within minutes. I waded in, turned the water off to the toilet at the angle stop (vocabulary word for the day!), and, to empty the tank further, then flushed it. Tank empty and water off, the leak slowed and stopped. Easy. But, it occurred to me, my teenage self would not have known what to do, and even many homeowners I've known would be left helplessly watching while their toilet poured water all over the floor endlessly, waiting for a plumber to arrive. So! Today, let's get a little familiarity with the different types of emergency shut-offs in your home.

Hi, I'm Terrin McCormack, the owner and home inspector behind Gable to Ground Home Inspections.

I've spent the past seven years inspecting homes across California, Idaho, Utah, and now Texas. Along the way, I've learned that a great home inspection is about more than finding defects. It's about giving you the information you need to understand the home you're buying—and having someone in your corner you can trust and feel comfortable asking questions.

My goal is simple: to provide a thorough, honest inspection without making the process intimidating.

I'll take the time to explain what I find, answer your questions, and help you understand what deserves attention now, what can be monitored, and what may simply be part of owning a home.

What is included in a home inspection?

A home inspection is a visual assessment of the structure's systems and components, providing a detailed report on its condition. I am looking at the home as a whole, and will refer you to specialists for any defects found. Included in my TREC licensed inspection is an evaluation of the roof, exterior, foundation, plumbing, electrical, and interior. 

How long does a typical inspection take?
The duration of an inspection may vary based on the property's size and complexity, typically ranging from 2 to 4 hours for a standard home.

Do I need to be present during the inspection?

Not at all, though we welcome the chance to meet you! You are welcome to attend for a Q & A after we have completed our assessment of your home. However, if you cannot be present at the time you schedule us to come by (we are all busy people), we are happy to call you with results afterward, or answer any questions you have once you've reviewed the finalized report.
